DMZ - QUANG TRI ANCIENT CITADEL
Details Itinerary
In the morning at 7am, we depart from Hue to Quang Tri, the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). On arrival, we will visit La Vang Church, the old Citadel of Quang Tri and Dong Ha Town. Lunch in a local restaurant then continue to discover the 17th parallel, Ben Hai River and Vinh Moc Tunnels. On the way back, we stop over at Cua Tung Beach.
• DMZ: Just a 5km either side of the river - a stark contrast to what really took place in this region. In fact, the surrounding region experienced some of the heaviest fighting during the Vietnam War. Bomb damage and craters are still evident in paddies, beside the railway tracks and beside the roads and bridges.
• La Vang Holy Land, a place formerly in the forest near what is now the city of Quang Tri up by the old DMZ. But all the various buildings of La Vang were totally destroyed in 1972, during the war between the North and the South. After the country's reunification (30 April 1975), all the Bishops of Viet Nam solemnly renewed the recognition of La Vang as a national Marian Centre.
• Quang Tri Citadel, a military bastion and an administrative head office of Nguyen Dynasty in Quang Tri Province from 1809 to 1945. The incident of 81 days and nights in 1972 during American War has made this citadel well-known all over the world.
• Vinh Moc Tunnels, an underground village designed to avoid bombardments during the American War. The network's total length is nearly 2km, structured into three floors which was home to 94 families and included wells to supply water, a meeting room for 60 people, toilets, a maternity ward, an operating theatre, rice stores, switchboards and observation posts.
